Nottingham Forest's Andrew Omobamidele is set to join Strasbourg, having been on the radar of Leeds United and Sheffield United in the past.
Nottingham Forest’s Andrew Omobamidele is poised to join Strasbourg, ending any possibility that he could end up at Leeds United or Sheffield United in the winter window.
The 22-year-old joined Forest in the summer of 2023, having impressed at Norwich City after joining the Canaries as a youngster.
However, he has found game time hard to come by at the City Ground, with his only minutes for Nuno Espírito Santo coming in the League Cup defeat to Newcastle United back in August.
Therefore, a move had always seemed likely before the February 3rd deadline, and it had been claimed that Leeds United were keen on Omobamidele, with boss Daniel Farke knowing the player well from his time at Carrow Road - where he handed him his debut.
It was also reported that Sheffield United were interested in the Irish international, with Chris Wilder on the lookout for a new central defensive option following Harry Souttar’s season-ending injury.
Yet, it appears both Yorkshire clubs are going to miss out on his signature, as L’Equipe have confirmed that Strasbourg are expected to sign Omobamidele after reaching an agreement with Forest.
The update says that the player has already arrived in France, so the deal is seemingly at an advanced stage.
Firstly, it should be said that Leeds and Sheffield United are currently occupying the top two places in the Championship, so it’s not like either club is in desperate need of reinforcements.
But, the January window is always about adding quality if the opportunity arises, and Omobamidele would certainly fall into that category.
He has shown himself to be a quality player at this level, and, given his age, he is someone who could develop into a very good defender in the years to come.
Whether he would get in the Leeds XI initially is debatable, but Pascal Struijk’s injury means Farke could’ve done with another option.
Meanwhile, the Blades’ situation is arguably more pressing after they lost Souttar, and you would expect Wilder to bring in a centre-back before the deadline as they look to last the distance in the automatic promotion battle.
