Lazio have reportedly reignited their interest in Lucas Torreira, who now plies his trade at Galatasaray.
The 29-year-old is a defensive midfielder who rose to prominence during his time at Sampdoria. His exploits at the Luigi Ferraris earned him a £25-million transfer to Arsenal in the summer of 2018.
The Uruguayan spent two campaigns at the Emirates, followed by two seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid and Fiorentina before sealing a permanent transfer to Galatasaray in 2022.
The midfielder established himself as a pillar for the Turkish champions, but his contract will expire in June 2026, thus leaving his future up in the air.
According to Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, Lazio have revived their old interest in Torreira. The Biancocelesti were heavily linked with the player on several occasions, beginning from 2021, but were never able to strike an agreement. Nevertheless, the midfielder’s current contract situation could be the opening they need.
Nevertheless, the transfer market insider reveals that Argentine rivals Boca Juniors and River Plate are also following Torreira, while Galatasaray are hellbent on extending the player’s contract to solidify their leverage on his future.
This season, Torreira made 41 appearances for the Istanbul-based giants across all competitions, contributing two goals and seven assists. It should be noted that several fans and observers have likened Lazio’s January signing, Reda Belahyane, to the Uruguay international due to his small stature, combative style and distribution skills.
