In a busy afternoon at Chelsea today, Nizaar Kinsella of the BBC has dropped in with news of the Blues attempts to sell Renato Veiga.

Interest was widespread earlier in the summer, but apart from Atletico Madrid’s bids, nothing became too concrete. That changed over the weekend, when Fabrizio Romano was among the sources reporting on bids from Spanish side Villareal for the Portugal international.

Fabrizio Romano’s Tweet about Villareal’s interest in Renato Veiga.

The Italian transfer insider said that Veiga was interested in the move, but cast doubt on Villareal’s ability to pay what Chelsea want.

Kinsella says today that Veiga has “agreed personal terms” and is ready to join the Spanish club if they can sort out a fee with Chelsea.

The Blues value Veiga at £34m according to his piece, while the Yellow Submarine want to spend less than £30m on the former Basel man.

That’s a pretty small gap, even given Villareal’s pretty limited budgets. It seems likely something can be sorted out before too long, especially when that sort of gap can be bridged with add-ons and other clauses based on performance.

Chelsea’s latest sale could trigger further incoming deals

Selling Veiga will give the Blues another injection of cash to bring their summer incomings to above £250m. That may allow them to move for another defender to replace the injured Levi Colwill, or perhaps will finally allow them to green light the deal for Xavi Simons.

It will also tick off another player from the extensive list of names the club want to move on this summer.

This is finally some promising progress on a sale which had gone rather cold in the last month or so. Nothing is done yet, but it’s all moving in the right direction at last.
