The transfers window is set to close imminently, and things are certainly starting to move in Belgium. According to HLN, should KV Mechelen lose captain Rob Schoofs to Union St Gilloise, the side want to bring in midfielders from Anderlecht. Union are set to lose Charles Vanhoutte to Nice and are eyeing up KV Mechelen’s captain as a replacement. KV Mechelen would certainly need to replace Schoofs, who has been a key player for the side over the past years. The club are looking to Anderlecht’s out of favour midfielders Mats Rits and Théo Leoni. According to reports, Mechelen prefer the younger option in Leoni, with discussions ongoing.

If Schoof’s does leave, he will likely go down as a legendary player in KV Mechelen’s history. Since joining in 2017 from Gent the central midfielder has played 282 games for the club, scoring 44 goals. He was part of the side that surprised Belgian football by winning the domestic cup in 2019, and also made the final in 2022/2023. In six games so far this season he has already scored twice and his departure would be a major blow to KV Mechelen.
