It has been an exciting few weeks for women’s football across the globe, with the Women’s World Cup kicking off in Australia and New Zealand yesterday (Thursday).
Watching on from the other side of the globe, Kit Loferski and her team-mates are looking forward to all the action that will come over the next few weeks, which involve past and current Celtic connections.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Celtic TV, the American talked up how fantastic it is to see the likes of Shen Mengyu jet off with the Chinese national team to play her part at this summer’s tournament.
She said: “The World Cup is great, being able to see girls represent their countries, and represent the sport as a whole on the world’s biggest stage.
'It’s something that is really exciting for them and it gives everybody an opportunity to show their stuff and see what they are made of.'
“It’s really cool to see current or ex-team-mates at the tournament. We were actually just watching the Ireland v Australia game.
“So being able to see Claire (O’Riordan) out there is great. And we also have Shen (Mengyu) at the World Cup with China.
“So it’s going to be really cool to see them representing their countries and make their families proud.”
Although international football is at the forefront of many supporters' mind right now, the start of the competitive matches is just under a week away, with pre-season preparations in full swing.
Fran Alonso and his squad have been hard at work on the training ground, with a number of new faces joining the group ahead of the start of the campaign.
Loferski has enjoyed getting down to work during pre-season, as the Ghirls get set for another enthralling season of action.
“So far, pre-season has been good,” she said. “We are ironing out some kinks, smoothing some things over and getting a feel and finding our grove.
“That is what pre-season is for. Whether that be ironing stuff out as a team or myself individually.
'We are all getting ready to roll into the regular season, and we also have Champions League to come.'
“It’s looking positive, and we are grinding out the hard work. That is exactly what pre-season is for, so it has been good.
Last campaign, Loferski played her part in the Scottish Cup triumph over Rangers at Hampden Park, and hit the back of the net several times as the Celts came within minutes of winning the SWPL title.
The American settled in quickly to life at Celtic, and it is easy to forget that Loferski only arrived ahead of the final 10 league matches of the campaign.
So pre-season has provided the forward with some valuable time to work on the training ground alongside her team-mates,
She said: “Having the time during pre-season to build up our understanding helps, no doubt! I still feel like it’s starting from the beginning in a way.
'There are new faces everywhere on the pitch, and I am kind of still readjusting to how football is played here.'
“Especially with the new players, and even myself. It’s always changing and adapting. You’ve also got other teams adapting to the way we play or us having to shift the way that we play a little bit.
She continued: “I still have a lot to learn myself, given the period that I came in last season. It was pretty hectic.
“Being the new kid on the block, you just kind of have to throw yourself in and make do with what you got.
“So there is lots of stuff for new girls to learn, and for me to learn. That is why I am here and in this environment, out of my comfort zone. But it’s something I really appreciate.
“The rest of the girls hold a really high standard, so it makes you want to play that much harder.”
