Manchester City supporters have now been handed an early hint as to where Kevin De Bruyne could be playing his football from next season.
The iconic Belgian playmaker will be leaving the Etihad Stadium on a free transfer next month, after club officials – alongside input from Pep Guardiola – opted not to hand De Bruyne fresh terms to extend his stay at Manchester City.
Having at first had various problems accepting the decision from the club, believing that he still has plenty to give at the very top level of European football, there is now more co-operation from De Bruyne in parting ways with his home of the last 10 years.
Tuesday night saw City’s home support bid farewell to arguably their greatest-ever player, on a night when Kevin De Bruyne had the opportunity to address fans from the centre of the Etihad Stadium pitch, and receive personal gifts from the club after a lightshow and video montage.
Club bosses also revealed on the evening that they had signed off on the decision to commission Kevin De Bruyne his very own statue outside of the Etihad Stadium, adding to those of Vincent Kompany, David Silva, and Sergio Aguero.
But the question still remains as to where the 33-year-old will be playing his football next season, and whether Manchester City could come up against the legendary midfielder in English top-flight competition.
According to the information of The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, Kevin De Bruyne has ruled out joining one of City’s Premier League rivals this summer, and will play his football at a foreign club from next season.
That insight comes after numerous reports had outlined the possibility of Premier League champions Liverpool looking into the idea of a shocking swoop, while Aston Villa also had their hat thrown into the ring.
The decision to move away from English football will come as a huge boost to a number of suitors who have been eyeing the services of the Belgium international since the announcement of his Manchester City exit was released.
Over in Italian football and Napoli are believed to be the side most serious about the prospect of welcoming De Bruyne to Serie A, while they could be boosted by his family’s love for the Amalfi Coast.
Further afield and Major League Soccer has long been touted as a potential destination for Manchester City’s iconic number 17, and The Chicago Fire are understood to be the leading option for De Bruyne in the United States.
