Juventus are keen on signing Marseille defender Leonardo Balerdi this summer to strengthen their backline (h/t La Gazzetta dello Sport).
The 5-2 defeat against Manchester City in the Club World Cup has shifted the Bianconeri’s focus towards defensive reinforcements in the transfer window.
With Gleison Bremer close to returning from a long-term injury, the Old Lady are seeking a top-quality central defender to partner him.
Manager Igor Tudor has handpicked Balerdi as the ideal target, having previously worked with him at Marseille.
He highly values the Argentine’s talent, discipline, leadership, adaptability and fighting spirit.
However, it will be difficult to prise him away from the French club, who are unwilling to sell one of their key players.
Balerdi’s responsibility has grown at Marseille after being handed the captaincy by manager Roberto De Zerbi.
The 26-year-old featured in 27 games in Ligue 1 last season, helping Les Minots secure Champions League qualification.
His impressive form at the club level has resulted in him becoming a regular for the Argentine national team. Balerdi is in contention to secure a place in the World Cup squad next year.
Several Premier League clubs and AS Roma are also keeping tabs on Balerdi, who could cost more than €40 million.
The Bianconeri are looking to sell some of the out-of-favour players to fund a move. Lloyd Kelly and Daniele Rugani are on the chopping block.
Juventus have lined up several alternatives if they fail to sign Balerdi. West Ham’s Nayef Aguerd, Bologna’s John Lucumi and Stuttgart’s Jeff Chabot are on the wishlist.
