After finally getting his first Juventus start, Douglas Luiz has been lambasted by angry fans and even his teammates urged him to stop taking terrible corners.
The Brazilian was a massive €50m investment from Aston Villa, though the cost was brought down by the inclusion of Enzo Barrenechea and Samuel Iling-Junior as part of the deal.
Funnily enough, Iling-Junior was loaned to Bologna and scored a wonderful equaliser in the 2-2 Serie A draw against Como today.
As for Douglas Luiz, he has raised eyebrows since his arrival in Turin, given only cameo appearances off the bench where he failed to impress.
He got his first start today and by half-time with the scoreline at 0-0 in Empoli, the fans had seen enough.
“I am starting to ask some real questions about Douglas Luiz…” wrote one fan, while another mockingly noted he was Brazilian in the same way as ex-Inter flop Vampeta.
One supporter even joked that “evidently Juventus had to get Douglas Luiz as part of the package deal to sign Alisha Lehmann,” referring to the fact his partner also joined Juventus Women this summer.
Worst of all was the criticism from his own teammate, because after a series of dreadful corners went straight into the arms of the goalkeeper, there was a breakthrough.
One of the corners was taken short for Teun Koopmeiners, who whipped in a fine cross for Federico Gatti’s header, forcing a tough save.
Gatti immediately pointed to the pair at the corner flag and ordered Koopmeiners to take the corners from now on, relegating Douglas Luiz from the only position where he was noticed.
