Barcelona are currently evaluating the possibility of renewing Wojciech Szczesny’s contract, as reported by MARCA.
It is no secret that Barcelona are actively working on the goalkeeping situation for the upcoming season, which is a more complex issue than it may initially seem.
One of the main factors in the club’s decision will be the recovery of Marc-Andre ter Stegen. There is little doubt that, if he regains his previous form, he will continue as the starting goalkeeper, making it unnecessary for Barcelona to sign anyone else.
However, if his recovery does not go as planned, the situation could change, and the club would need to make a decision on signing a new player.
Amidst all this, Inaki Pena plays a key role. The young keeper has a contract that runs until 2026 and over the coming months, Barcelona will need to decide whether to offer him a contract renewal.
Another consideration is Pena’s future ambitions; the goalkeeper may choose to stay at Barcelona, where he plays a secondary role behind ter Stegen, or he might seek a move to a club where he can play regularly as the first-choice keeper. This is not a straightforward decision for either the club or Pena.

Then there is Szczesny, who is yet to make an appearance this season. His contract with Barcelona expires at the end of the season.
When he joined the club, he was fully aware that his role would primarily be as a backup to Pena, only stepping in if the youngster underperformed or was injured.
Despite his lack of game time, Szczesny’s attitude has impressed the club. He has accepted his situation with professionalism, staying prepared in case he is called upon.
His approach to the role has been described as exemplary by sources within the dressing room, and the club values his commitment.
If there are no changes in the situation, Barcelona are likely to open talks with Szczesny about extending his contract for another season. Both sporting director Deco and head coach Hansi Flick are in agreement that having three goalkeepers in the squad is beneficial.
This provides security in case of injuries or, in Pena’s case, a potential transfer to another team. As a result, Barcelona are inclined to offer Szczesny the chance to remain for another year, provided he is willing to continue in his current role.
