Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are reportedly targeting Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konaté ahead of the summer transfer window, with the player said to be interested in a move back to his hometown. According to Julien Laurens of ESPN, “Paris Saint-Germain are keen to sign Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté in the summer and the player is interested in a move to the Ligue 1 club, sources have told ESPN.”
The French giants are keen to bolster their backline, seeking a long-term defensive partner for Marquinhos. Laurens reports that PSG view Konaté as a potential successor for the Brazilian, who turns 31 in May. The prospect of pairing Konaté with Marquinhos could provide PSG with much-needed defensive solidity for years to come.
Konaté, who was born in Paris and developed through the ranks of Paris FC’s academy, could find the prospect of returning home appealing. “Sources have told ESPN that the France international is tempted by a return to the city of his birth,” Laurens wrote. The 25-year-old defender left Paris for Sochaux in 2014 before making his name at RB Leipzig and eventually joining Liverpool in a £36 million deal in 2021.
Liverpool are understandably reluctant to part with one of their key defensive assets. With 116 appearances for the club, Konaté has established himself as Arne Slot’s preferred partner alongside Virgil van Dijk. The defender’s contract runs until 2026, and Liverpool have made moves to secure his future.
In a recent press conference, Konaté acknowledged the club’s contract offer but remained non-committal: “I’m really focused on what will happen now and then we will see what happens. This is another conversation.”
This news should set alarm bells ringing. Konaté is not just a promising defender; he’s integral to the club’s defensive stability. While his injury record raises concerns, his performances alongside van Dijk have been pivotal.
The fact that PSG’s interest coincides with his hesitancy over a new deal is particularly troubling. With only 18 months left on his contract, the club should move swiftly to resolve the situation. Reports of an imminent extension last year now appear overly optimistic, and Konaté’s ambiguous response in the press only adds fuel to the fire.
A defensive exodus would be catastrophic for Liverpool, especially with the transition from Klopp to Slot still fresh. Losing a homegrown talent to PSG, particularly one of Konaté’s calibre, would be a significant blow. Liverpool’s defensive future needs securing – and that starts with tying down Ibrahima Konaté.
