Manchester City have sold a host of academy graduates in recent seasons. Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia, James Trafford, Morgan Rogers, Liam Delap and more have departed the club in recent years. The Manchester City academy is the ideal breeding ground for young players looking to make it as a professional player. Now it appears that Jacob Wright is set to be the next academy graduate to leave Manchester City. His potential move is further evidence of just how good City’s academy has become.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Jacob Wright is on the verge of completing a permanent move to Swansea. Furthermore, Romano reports that Swansea have seen off competition from Middlesbrough to sign Wright. Lastly, Romano adds that the package that will see Wright move to Swansea will total £4 million.
The Manchester City academy is fast becoming the ideal breeding ground for potential first-team players. Whether that’s at Manchester City or at any other club. We have seen this across the Premier League and in the lower leagues of English football. You can also look across Europe and you’ll find a City academy graduate playing well. That’s a feather in the cap of Manchester City as a club. It shows that the resources that City invest in youth development are paying off. Players such as Phil Foden, Rico Lewis and Oscar Bobb have graduated into Pep Guardiola’s squad from the City youth system. If a player doesn’t, they are then sold, which aids City’s finances.
Jacob Wright appears to be the next player to follow this path. He has shown his talent while playing in City’s youth system. He has also impressed during his brief appearances in the City first-team. It will now be interesting to see how he develops at Swansea. Wright has the potential to play at the highest level. If he can fulfil that potential we may well see him back at the Etihad one day in the future.
But Wright’s imminent sale to Swansea is another win for the Manchester City academy. It’s producing players who have the opportunity to make it at the highest level with Jacob Wright now looking to be another success story for City’s development system.
