In an interview with France Football, Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembélé (26) was asked about the possibility of being the next winner of the Ballon d’Or. The 26-year-old is the favourite to win the award, which is largely recognised to symbolise the greatest footballer in the world.
Dembélé has had a stellar season for PSG this season as he played a starring role in Luis Enrique’s side winning an unprecedented treble and securing an elusive UEFA Champions League crown. The France international forward scored 33 goals and registered 15 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions. Asked about winning the Ballon d’Or, Dembélé said, “These are difficult things to say. But winning a Ballon d’Or when you’re a soccer player is obviously the Holy Grail individually. It’s something you dream about when you’re little. I remember back when it was on Téléfoot, watching the players line up to receive the Ballon d’Or; it was incredible. The award is exceptional.”
The forward wasn’t even considered as a potential candidate to win football’s most prestigious individual award at the halfway point of the season. However, after Les Parisiens’ upturn in form, Dembélé has seen his performances recognised as being instrumental in what has proven to be the most successful season in the Ligue 1 club’s history.
Commenting on his prospects, the PSG forward added, “I hope to be among the thirty nominees already. (Smiles.) I’ve had some difficult years with injuries and poor performances too… This season, I think I’ve performed well, so we’ll see what happens. It would be exceptional to have my name on the list. And being one of the favourites is already a great victory, even if I hope to win it one day.”
