Didier Deschamps has clarified his decision to include Rayan Cherki (21) in the France senior squad for the June international window, ending months of speculation around the Lyon attacker’s international future. The 21-year-old, eligible for both Algeria and Italy, has finally been handed a senior call-up after months of pressure and growing form in Ligue 1.“Why now? Because I’ve decided so,” Deschamps said during his press conference transcribed by RMC Sport on Thursday. “It’s my responsibility.”

Cherki has already represented France at various youth levels but will not feature at the upcoming UEFA European Under-21 Championship, with Deschamps confirming that the tournament falls outside FIFA dates and that the player will remain with the senior squad instead. “The Under-21 Euros aren’t part of the FIFA calendar,” he explained. “He won’t take part. He’s with me.”

The decision comes after the OL attacker’s notable improvement in form.
