Since the Football Association (FA) decided to hire Thomas Tuchel as Gareth Southgate’s successor, there has been a raging debate about whether England should have hired an English manager like Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe.

Howe and other English options like Graham Potter, Frank Lampard, and Steven Gerrard were reportedly on the shortlist before England hired only their third-ever foreign coach.

The Newcastle manager is the most highly-touted of the bunch. Howe has earned praise for his superb work at AFC Bournemouth and turned heads when he took Newcastle to the UEFA Champions League.

The 46-year-old still has a particular hurdle he has never crossed, and former Watford striker Troy Deeney believes he must surmount that challenge before he can be considered an elite coach.

“It’s all on Eddie Howe,” Deeney started (via talkSPORT). “It’s on his shoulders to win something. If he can win an FA Cup or a League Cup, it would change. At the moment, we are considered good coaches and good managers but not winners.”

Ally McCoist also agreed that the Amersham-born coach needs to win to be in the elite bracket. He has reportedly been overlooked by the heavyweights because he hasn’t won a trophy.

Indeed, Howe is one of the better managers in the top flight, but he needs to engineer something special with the Toons to earn himself a bigger job.

This Newcastle team is ripe for a trophy, considering the investment poured into the club. He will get a top job in the country if he can secure Newcastle a first trophy since their Intertoto Cup win in 2006.

Newcastle (8th) cannot possibly dream of competing for the title. They are already ten points behind league leaders Liverpool but are just a point behind third-placed Chelsea, and they will be looking to usurp their place. They sent the Blues packing in the League Cup round of 16 to book a place in the quarter-final against Brentford.

At St. James’ Park, Newcastle should have the advantage to come out on top. Howe needs a trophy to solidify his reputation as an excellent manager, and the League Cup is his best bet.
