After finishing the 2023/2024 campaign in sixth place in the Barclays Women’s Super League table, Spurs cannot finish higher than ninth this term. A poor second half of the season has contributed to their lower ranking.
When speaking to the media ahead of the final game of the season at Everton, Spurs boss Vilahamn admitted that there’s a lot to learn from the last nine months.
“When you look into this season and the expectations, we were maybe not ready to take the next steps both as an organisation and staffing group and the players,” Vilahamn said.
“The way we play is a difficult way of playing football. It’s about bravery; to be good on the ball, you have to build relationships, collaborate to make sure we can win games. Losing a few key players and staff members and taking steps in the way that we want to play has made us lose a few games.
“It’s a learning curve where we need to make sure we adapt and compete in games. We also need to take steps now to make sure that next season, we can play our style and be much sharper in our game management and the areas that we need to improve.
“You can learn a lot from mistakes and from this season. Together with the first season, we know where we are and what we need to improve on. Definitely, it’s a learning curve.”
Turning his focus towards latest opponents Everton, Vilahamn highlighted the fact that Spurs want to be competing strongly with the Merseyside club.
He said “Brian [Sørensen] has been there for a few years and they always have a very tactical approach and flexibility within that. He has done some good stuff with that club. They had a lot of injuries last season but it looks like they’ve invested more since Christmas, so they’re looking quite strong.
“They’re one of those teams that are in and around us that we want to beat and be better than but right now, they’ve had a better spring season than us.
“They’re a club with high potential. It looks like they’re going to invest even more for next season, so they’re one of those clubs that we want to beat.”
Tottenham Hotspur’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Everton kicks-off at 12.30pm on Saturday afternoon.
