Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner says that the Women’s League Cup group stage fixture against Liverpool will be a good test for his side.

The Red Devils play host to the Merseyside club at the Leigh Sports Village on Wednesday evening.

Liverpool completed a league double over Manchester United last season and Skinner highlighted those games as examples of where his side need to be better. When speaking to WSL Full-Time ahead of the latest meeting, Skinner said that the game will be a good test to see where his new-look Manchester United side are.

“It’s a good test,” Skinner said. “We played them in the League Cup last year and both teams adapted and we won the game. In the league, we fell short to set-pieces. We’ve got to be alive on those tomorrow night.

“It’ll be a good challenge. Knowing Beardy [Matt Beard], he will have wanted maximum points from the two [league] games but having played Leicester and West Ham [ourselves], we know that you have to break them down.

“It’ll be a different game tomorrow, these games have a different edge to them. It’ll be highly-competitive but it’ll be a nice barometer to see where both teams are at.”

Skinner went on to say that he will make changes to his side for their latest fixture but that Manchester United are still keen to do well in the Women’s League Cup.

He said “We have always taken the League Cup seriously, it just falls at a time where you get three-game weeks. You have to balance that for the players. Even if we play some different players, it’s not about rotation, it’s about deserved minutes. I want a highly-competitive squad, so there will be some changes in the team.

“Last year, we didn’t progress to the knockout stages due to something out of our hands. We really want to do that and go as far as we can as well.

“Neither team will take this game lightly, it’s just about trying to get a good performance and a win tomorrow night.”
