Italy take on Germany tonight at the San Siro in the first leg of the 2024/25 Nations League Quarter Finals.
The Nations League might not be the most illustrious among football trophies, but Italy are in desperate need of some morale-boosting success after their dismal showing at Euro 2024. Plus, a game against Die Mannschaft is never an ordinary one for the Azzurri, who have faced (and beat) Germany on a number of historical occasions but have been winless against them since 2012.
Luciano Spalletti has worked hard to pick up the pieces after last summer’s Euro-disaster and Italy’s recent group stage performances have been encouraging – save for the final slipup at San Siro against France. To prevail in the upcoming double-confrontation against Germany would also mean for the Azzurri to get an easier seeding in the path towards the 2026 World Cup. Follow tonight’s Italy vs Germany game in our LIVE UPDATES:
Spalletti should line up Italy in a 3-5-2 fashion. With both designated wingbacks – Andrea Cambiaso and Federico Dimarco – unavailable, it will be likely up to Matteo Politano and Destiny Udogie to marshal the flanks. Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Barella will form a solid midfield line, with Nicolò Rovella playing deeper.
No surprises in defense as Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Alessandro Bastoni, and Riccardo Calafiori will play ahead of Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal.
Upfront, Spalletti can’t count on the current Serie A capocannoniere Mateo Retegui. The attacking pair will likely be Moise Kean and Giacomo Raspadori.
