Italian journalist Paolo Ziliani has blasted Napoli manager Antonio Conte following a controversial 1-1 draw at Inter Milan last weekend.
During an interview with FCInter1908, Ziliani addressed Conte’s media outburst after being held winless at Giuseppe Meazza.
Napoli took the lead midway through the first half as Scott McTominay tapped the ball home from barely a yard out.
However, Inter restored parity on the brink of halftime through Hakan Calhanoglu.
The controversial moment took place in the 74th minute.
Denzel Dumfries went to the ground inside Napoli’s 18-yard box after Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa’s mistimed tackle.
Though the contact looked thin, referee Maurizio Mariani immediately pointed to the spot.
Since there was no intervention from the VAR booth, Calhanoglu assumed responsibility.
But he failed to convert a penalty for the first time during his Nerazzurri career.
Nonetheless, Mariani’s decision provoked an angry reaction from Conte.
The ex-Inter boss lashed out at match officials, even though Napoli benefited from an identical situation at Empoli.
Conte didn’t complain about the referee at that time.
However, his hypocrisy didn’t go unnoticed.
“This is why seeing Antonio Conte, who during Juvents’ glory days engaged in a furious quarrel with Boban on the evening of Muntari’s goal, minimizing the error of referee Tagliavento, sounds comical, even grotesque,” Ziliani stated.
“For the same ridiculous contact (Anguissa-Dumfries), Conte’s Napoli won the Empoli match a month ago.
“The only difference was Empoli manager D’Aversa didn’t go on TV to make a scene.
“Empoli protested in vain, no one paid attention, and that was the end of it for the wronged club.
“In short, if you accept the gift falling from the sky today, you have no right to complain if tomorrow the same gift goes to others.”
