It was a positive weekend for Chelsea – the men’s team won, the women’s team won, the Under 18s won, and there was generally a good feeling on all fronts as the strong start to the campaign on all fronts resumed after the men’s international break.
It wasn’t just players at the club doing well – some of our loanees continue to thrive. Alfie Gilchrist made his first appearances with the first team last season but is now at Sheffield United on loan, where he’s doing really well. The Blades drew 2-2 against Coventry this weekend as they weren’t able to hold on to a lead when reduced to ten men, but that defensive effort gave Gilchrist another chance to shine.

Football League World pundit Carlton Palmer was full of praise for the defender:
“It’s always nice when a player comes to a club and hints that he would like to stay further,” Palmer said, following Gilchrist’s hints about staying long term at Bramall Lane.
“He has done fantastically well on loan at Sheffield United from Chelsea this season and has hinted that he would be interested in signing for the Blades if they’re promoted to the Premier League next season. If they’re promoted, or if they’re not promoted, I think it would be a fantastic signing for Alfie to come to Sheffield United and brilliant for the club to have him.”
There is a long queue of talent at centre back in the first team right now, as well as the constant threat we might sign more. We’d love to have Alfie back, but given the positive impression he’s making in the Championship with Chris Wilder’s team, wouldn’t be at all surprised if he ends up making the move there permanent.
