Former Luton Town boss Rob Edwards looks set to become the next manager of Middlesbrough.

That’s according to a report from Sky Sports News on Tuesday, who revealed the 42-year-old is in advanced talks to become Michael Carrick’s successor on Teesside.

The former Manchester United midfielder was sacked by Boro earlier this month after finishing outside the Championship play-off places this past season.

Danny Rohl may have been preferable to Edwards

Speaking to Football League World, we asked our Middlesbrough fan pundit, Phil Auton, whether he would be happy with the appointment of Edwards.

Auton said: “I think it's a funny one with Edwards because he's got two promotions to his name, obviously with Luton and Forest Green Rovers.

“But I think for a lot of Boro supporters, he's very much in the mould of Carrick, or it feels like that, so it's kind of like, well, are you losing one, just to clone it a little bit with another?

“I think he's really well in with Kieran Scott, our head of football, so it might be a good thing or a bad thing, but it does feel a little bit like jobs for the boys.

“It's a strange one, because like I say, he's got two promotions to his name and Danny Rohl hasn't, but I think the majority of Boro fans would prefer Danny Rohl coming in.

“I think we'd be behind him, don't get us wrong, we're not that kind of fanbase, but I think it would be a little bit underwhelming, him getting it.

“And I think the other thing is, you know, we've been searching for a manager for a little while now, he's been out of work. If it was going to be Rob Edwards, why has it taken so long?

“Surely something straightforward where someone's unemployed and there's a vacancy, that should be a bit quicker fit, you would think, unless alternatively they are looking at others as well as him and he's just now emerged as the frontrunner."

Whilst Rohl would have undoubtedly been an exciting appointment after his work with Sheffield Wednesday, as Phil acknowledged, he does lack the experience that Edwards possesses.

There are very few managers, without a job, who have a promotion from the Championship on their CV.

That the former Luton man did so through the play-offs is another plus point, as that route to promotion brings a unique pressure that few can deal with, and Edwards has proven he can.

He also put up an incredible fight in the Premier League with Luton, against the odds, showing a spirit that some promoted sides have lacked in recent years, which suggests the best chance of getting up and staying up is with a manager like Edwards.

Nevertheless, following the miracles Rohl has worked at Wednesday, it does feel like he has the potential to be a once-in-a-generation coach, so disappointment that it’s not the German taking over is not misplaced.

Still, in Edwards, Boro will be getting a manager well-versed in exactly how to achieve the one goal everyone at the Riverside has been longing to reach.
