The Braga attacking midfielder turns his back on France and Spain to represent Tunisia.
Ismaël Gharbi
Ismaël Gharbi has made his decision. Born to a Tunisian father and a Spanish mother, the SC Braga player—also eligible to play for France—has chosen to represent the Tunisian national team. Arriving in Tunis on Monday, August 11, he began the necessary administrative procedures before heading back in the evening to fulfill his commitments with the Portuguese club.
At 21 years old, Gharbi came up through the ranks at Paris Saint-Germain, where he made 12 first-team appearances and provided one assist. Loaned out to Stade Lausanne-Ouchy for the 2022-2023 season, he joined Braga last summer. Gradually, he has established himself in the squad, earning the trust of his coach and teammates.
With the Tunisian national team, he will also be looking to make his mark. His decision to play for the Eagles of Carthage comes just weeks before the squad’s next gathering for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. A first call-up to Tunisia could be on the horizon.
