Isco is currently one of the most successful creative midfielders in Spain, having won numerous titles during his time at Real Madrid.

Joining the club in 2013, the Spaniard featured in 353 competitive matches, notably being involved in over 100 goals while securing no less than five Champions League titles.

Currently plying his trade for Real Betis, Isco has recently opened up about his Real Madrid exit and what forced him to leave Santiago Bernabeu last year.

“I broke down instead of giving more”

Isco revealed that he was not enjoying the best of times at Real Madrid during the end of his spell. He was particularly struggling with a lack of game time, which was taking a mental toll.

“I was at Real Madrid for many years, I was very happy. Things happened with managers, no matter what I did I wasn’t going to play,” Isco said (h/t Mundo Deportivo).

“I lacked being mentally prepared, there were moments when instead of giving a little more I broke down,” he added.

Isco left Real Madrid in 2022, joining Sevilla on a free transfer. He struggled to remain a key player for Los Blancos during the last few years of his spell at the Bernabeu.

Isco on leaving Real Madrid

Talking about his exit, Isco said he did not feel needed at the Bernabeu. “I had to leave Madrid, because I felt like I didn’t have to be there anymore,” he said.

The Spaniard, though, added that the decision to leave Real Madrid was a difficult one.

“But taking that step of leaving the best club in the world is complicated, getting the right moment when you have to take that step is even more difficult,” the playmaker said.

Isco went on to highlight his close bond with Real Madrid, having spent nine years at the club and winning several accolades.

“I was at Real Madrid for nine years, the last few seasons I was more apathetic due to circumstances that one day I will tell about,” he added.

Isco is currently at Real Betis, a club he joined earlier this summer. He has even emerged as a key individual for Los Beticos, notably featuring in 11 competitive matches and being involved in three goals so far this season.
