Ipswich have had the luxury of having Leif Davis as their left-back as he enters his fourth season with the club.

His reliability and attacking-minded style of play has made him one of the first names on Kieran McKenna's teamsheet week in week out.

After bringing in the experienced Conor Townsend into the building from West Brom last year, his time in a Town shirt has been brief to say the least, merely making six league appearances last campaign.

Townsend suffered a major injury in pre-season to his ACL in which he underwent successful surgery and is expected to miss the entirety of the season, as reported by TWTD.

With depth in the left-back area now looking sparse, an injury to Leif Davis could prove to be costly. McKenna should look for reinforcements with the transfer window's closure just around the corner.

Josh Doig would be a perfect fit for Kieran McKenna's system

Scottish international Josh Doig was a vital cog in the Sassuolo side that finished top of Serie B to earn promotion back to the Italian top-flight last season.

The highly-rated left-back has played in both the Scottish Premiership with Hibernian and Serie A with Verona. Therefore, the experience he could bring with a move to Ipswich Town would be more than welcomed.

His willingness to get forward as well as stability in defence mimics the traits of Davis and would give McKenna the depth that he so desperately needs in that position.

After signing from Verona, Doig cemented his place in the Sassuolo team last season as the Scotsman made 29 league appearances and netted one goal and provided one assist. With Doig set to make the step-up to Serie A once again in their opening game against Italian champions, Napoli, he is certainly one to monitor for the future.

Despite Davis being hard to replace, Doig would certainly create healthy competition, which wouldn't be a bad problem for McKenna to have on his hands.

Doig has already proved that he is a threat going forward this season as he scored the winning goal with a delicately placed volley in Sassuolo's first-round Coppa Italia win against Catanzaro.

Josh Doig would be smart business for Ipswich Town

The 23-year-old could fit the bill for Ipswich Town in their need for defensive reinforcements as his attacking profile suits McKenna’s progressive, attacking full-back system. Doig has been well-renowned throughout his time in the Italian leagues for playing high up the pitch, overlapping, and delivering dangerous crosses.

This was the case with his former side Hellas Verona, where the Scot was frequently used as an attacking outlet on the left in their wing-back system.

His proven ability in his delivery from wide areas would offer a similar option for McKenna if Davis is unavailable or needs rotating.

However, despite being 23-years-old, Doig has notably spent some time on the sidelines whilst at Verona, where he suffered a couple of minor injuries. It's a record that is one to monitor, but of no real concern as his experience playing in Italy and attacking nature makes him a great potential option at left-back for Ipswich.
