According to TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, the Tractor Boys are the 40-year-old’s likeliest destination following his exit from Everton.

Young is currently a free agent after his departure from the Toffees at the end of the previous campaign, ending a two-year stint at Goodison Park.

The winger-turned-full-back featured 32 times in the Premier League last season, contributing one goal and three assists.

It has been claimed via TalkSPORT's live transfer news blog (11:40AM) that Watford’s pursuit of Young has collapsed due to the player’s wage demands, which didn't align with the Hornets' current salary structure.

It was hoped that the 40-year-old would return to where his lengthy career began, having come through the Hornets’ academy system to establish himself as a first-team star before joining Aston Villa in 2007.

However, it has now been reported that freshly-relegated Ipswich, who are in receipt of first-year parachute payments, are set to win the race for the veteran wide-man's signature following his exit from Everton.

According to the Watford Observer, Young’s salary would have broken the wage structure at the club, which has led to the deal breaking down.

Young is set to join Kieran McKenna’s side, with their aim set on gaining promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

The former Everton player is available as a free agent, and is now likely to move to Portman Road for the upcoming campaign.

Ipswich Town’s summer business

Ipswich have made three additions to their squad so far this summer, bringing Azor Matusiwa and David Button to the club on a permanent basis.

Cedric Kipre has also been signed on loan from Stade Reims, with the midfielder returning to English football after previously playing for West Brom.

The Tractor Boys have until 1 September to complete any remaining transfer deals.

Their opening game of the upcoming league campaign comes on 8 August with a trip to face fellow promotion hopefuls Birmingham City.

Ashley Young will bring experience to Ipswich Town

Young coming in as a free agent will be a boost to Ipswich’s strength and depth, while providing an immense amount of experience to the dressing room.

The former England international is capable of playing across the left flank, and he can provide strong cover in multiple areas.

While he may not be able to play every game in a demanding Championship season, he will still be able to bring quality to the side.

He featured 32 times in the Premier League last season, and showed he is more than capable of competing at a second division level despite his age, so this could prove a shrewd signing for their upcoming promotion push.
