Ipswich Town may already have a Jens Cajuste replacement on their books in Cameron Humphreys, who spent last season on loan at Wycombe Wanderers.

Ipswich Town might not need to spend millions on a replacement for loan midfielder Jens Cajuste, as Cameron Humphreys could be ready to make the step-up.

The Tractor Boys will be competing in the Championship next season, following their relegation from the Premier League. Despite a valiant effort to maintain their top flight status, Kieran McKenna's side came up short when all was said and done.

It was guaranteed that Ipswich would lose some of their players this summer, with Liam Delap joining Chelsea, and Cajuste returning to his parent club, Napoli.

The Swedish international was one of Town's best performers last season, and club chairman Mark Ashton has already vocalised that Ipswich are in discussions with the Serie A champions over a permanent move for Cajuste.

However, if a deal isn't able to be agreed, the Suffolk-based side have a young, hungry midfielder already on the books who could fill the void left by the Napoil loanee.

Cameron Humphreys' incredible loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers

Ipswich fans can be forgiven for not really paying attention to any of their young stars on loan last season, after a return to the top flight would've firmly been their main focus.

Despite this, it was hard to miss the excellent progress of young midfielder Humphreys, who spent last campaign on loan with Wycombe Wanderers. The 21-year-old scored seven goals and assisted six more in 44 league and play-off appearances for the Chairboys, and was named the club's Young Player of the Season.

Whilst a disappointing end-of-season collapse ultimately led to the Blues failing to gain promotion, it didn't take any shine off Humphreys' wonderful loan spell in Wycombe's engine room.

His composure on the ball, ability to create chances, and eye for goal made him the perfect creative midfielder for Matt Bloomfield's highly attacking system, chipping in with some key contributions as the Chairboys pushed for promotion.

Following the change of management, the Ispwich loanee slightly struggled under Mike Dodds, and wasn't really given the same role that he was under Bloomfield, due to the style of football being completely different.

All-in-all, it was a hugely successful loan spell for Humphreys, who has more than proven he's perfectly capable and ready to make the step-up into the Championship next season.

It's clear to see that Ipswich are in the market for a midfielder, as an exclusive report from Football League World revealed that the Tractor Boys were pursuing a move for Watford's Tom Dele-Bashiru.

With Ashton's admission that discussions are still ongoing between Cajuste and the Suffolk club over a potential return to Portman Road, the engine room looks to be a priority target for Town this summer.

However, based on the evidence shown at Wycombe, Ipswich could well have their next midfield maestro right under their noses in Humphreys, who has proven to be ready to play consistent Championship football.

A product of the club's youth academy, the 21-year-old will be quickly taken to the hearts of the Town faithful, thanks to his excellent work ethic and composure on the ball at such a young age.

Ipswich fans have seen glimpses of Humphreys over the years, but it's likely they'll be seeing a totally different player when he next pulls on the blue shirt, thanks to a full season of consistent minutes under his belt.

With that in mind, Ipswich could save millions by entrusting the man lovingly known as 'The Suffolk Messi' in their midfield, and reap the rewards of his development in the future.
