Argentina will be in the knockout rounds of the Copa America.
The reigning Copa and World Cup champions have won both of their first two group stage matches.
Argentina beat Canada 1-0 in the tournament opener. Then, yesterday, they secured a 1-0 victory against Chile.
It was a hard-fought win for Martinez and his teammates.
Argentina knocked on the door for much of the match without breaking through.
But it was Inter captain Martinez who popped up in the box when it mattered most. THe 26-year-old seized on a loose ball after a corner in the 88th minute, finishing emphatically.
For the second match in a row, Martinez has come off the bench at this summer’s Copa America and scored for Argentina.
And this time, the goal proved to be decisive.
Martinez noted that “The ball was just there for me.”
“And I managed to set myself for the short,” he continued.
“These matches are always like this,” Martinez said after the 1-0 win. “We have to keep going, playing our game the way we always do.”
“We have to face every match this way. They’ll all be tricky.”
“We come up against opponents who defend deep, sometimes with a backline of five. That always makes it a bit tricky.”
“But we’re happy that in the end we managed to get three points.”
Meanwhile, of his celebration towards the stands after his goal, Martinez explained that “It’s because that’s where my family are.”
“As I always say, I play for them.”
