Inter Milan want a final response from Denzel Dumfries to their contract extension offer by the end of the international break.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They report that the Nerazzurri will not budge on the issue of a release clause in a new deal.
The new season is well underway. And as of yet, Dumfries has not signed a contract extension with Inter.
The Dutchman is still on the same deal that he signed when he joined the Nerazzurri from PSV in the summer of 2021.
As such, Dumfries is out of contract with Inter at the end of next June.
Inter and Dumfries have been in talks regarding an extension for some time, however.
Earlier in the year, it seemed as though an agreement on a new deal for the Dutchman was unlikely. This was due to sizable distance in the negotiations regarding wages.
However, Dumfries then seemed to open up to accepting Inter’s highest offer.
The Nerazzurri have put a wage increase to €4 million net per season on the table. This would make Dumfries’s wages commensurate with those of fellow wingback Federico Dimarco.
During the Euros, there were contacts between Inter and Dumfries’s representatives.
And these seemed to go very positively, with an agreement getting close.
And in the meantime, Dumfries did not hide the fact that he is happy at Inter and wants to stay at the club in his public remarks during the Euros.
Therefore, Inter did not decide to sell Dumfries.
For some time, reports indicate that the Nerazzurri’s plan was to sell the Dutchman if he did not sign a new contract.
This would be to avoid a situation where Dumfries leaves on a free transfer next summer, as recently happened with defender Milan Skriniar.
And as the transfer window came to a close, a new contract for Dumfries has appeared close at hand.
But as of yet, the 28-year-old has not put pen to paper on a new deal.
The Gazzetta confirm that a key issue is that Dumfries is hoping for a relatively low release clause in a new deal. This would be to potentially facilitate a move to the Premier League.
Inter have made clear that they will not accept such a clause in a new deal for the Dutchman.
Therefore, the ball is in Dumfries’s court.
At the moment, the Inter wingback is with the Netherlands national team for the break. But by the end of the international break, the Gazzetta reports, Inter want his final response.
