This was always bound to be a fairly prosaic window for Chelsea. For both squad size and financial reasons they’ve got to sell before they can buy, and that involves mainly shedding lesser used players from the squad.
The rumour are dominated by talks of departures for half forgotten squad players like Axel Disasi and Cesare Casadei, as well as backups like Renato Veiga.
There’s very little talk about players coming in, and that’s why the chatter about Mathys Tel earlier this week was so eyebrow raising. The young winger isn’t getting a kick at Bayern Munich, and the rumours from Germany were that Chelsea were trying to sell Christopher Nkunku and buy Tel in a parallel deal.
Today we have another update from Sky Germany insider Florian Plettenberg, who sadly has some pretty icy cold water to pour on the news.
He says that Tel has “made it clear” that he “wants to stay at FC Bayern.”

The dream of signing an exciting new attacking option this winter is dead, it seems. But there’s still the potential of the Nkunku deal happening regardless. Personal terms are “100%” agreed, and the club would like to make the deal happen before deadline day. If they can’t get it over the line, they will be back for him in the summer.
Chelsea are not in a desperate situation where they need to sell, and Nkunku is not yet kicking up a fuss about a lack of minutes. But if he feels a good opportunity to leave has been shut down by the club, he might start to get unhappy.
We’ll be keeping an eye on this one right up to the deadline.
