Inigo Martinez’s departure from Barcelona to join Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr surprised many.
The Spanish defender had no obvious reason to leave, especially as he had become one of Hansi Flick’s most trusted players.
However, just days after Barcelona returned from their pre-season tour of Asia, the veteran centre-back announced his decision to move on.
The story, as reported by SPORT, began only a few weeks before the official announcement. Around 20 days earlier, Martinez received an initial call from Saudi Arabia regarding the possibility of joining Al Nassr.
Not long after, a firm offer arrived – one that was simply too good to reject. The terms included a staggering €20 million net per season, with the deal structured for two years.
In total, the defender stood to earn almost €40 million, a life-changing sum for a player approaching the end of his career at 34 years old.
At Barcelona, Martinez was earning around €6 million net and had just one year left on his contract. When he discussed a possible extension with sporting director Deco, he received no clear assurances for the 2026/27 season.

This lack of commitment played a huge role in his decision to accept the lucrative Saudi offer. On the flight back from Asia, Martinez shared the news with Flick and a few close teammates.
Contrary to some reports, there was no release clause in his contract. Instead, the Barcelona board allowed him to leave as a gesture of respect, while also saving on wages.
Flick was far from pleased with the outcome. The German coach valued Martinez highly, not only for his defensive quality but also for his leadership within a young and evolving squad.
Barcelona’s board saw the move as a kind gesture towards a loyal professional, but it is debatable whether letting go of a starting defender was the right call.
For now, Martinez looks set to enjoy his adventure in Saudi Arabia, with retirement on the horizon after his contract ends.
His exit leaves a noticeable gap in Barcelona’s defence and raises questions about whether the club made the right choice in letting him go so easily.
