While it’s been an overtly quiet transfer window on the incomings front up to this stage for Manchester United fans, there’s seemingly been more going on behind the scenes than they’re aware of.

The most concrete link of the month thus far came only a matter of days ago when United opened talks with Lecce over fullback Patrick Dorgu. Aside from that, targets have been kept under wraps.

A surprising report emerged today, however, which claims the Red Devils made an 11th-hour attempt to hijack Julio Enciso’s move from Brighton and Hove Albion to Ipswich Town, according to TuttoMercatoWeb.

It comes amid growing uncertainty regarding Alejandro Garnacho’s future, prompting United to try and acquire another up-and-coming prospect to succeed the Argentine if he were to depart to either Napoli or Chelsea.

Journalist Christian Martin detailed INEOS’ last-ditch approach for the Seagulls starlet and how they were quickly snubbed due to his desire for regular playing time – something he wouldn’t have been guaranteed at Old Trafford.

“What I can tell you is that at the last minute of yesterday’s day, a call from Manchester United arrived,” Martin began.

“Manchester United wanted Julio to be potentially the replacement in case Garnacho goes to Napoli or another club. There are several interested, but Garnacho has had a problem with Amorim. The situation is not the same in the club where he grew up. Garnacho has been playing for many years as a youth player, and immediately came the call from the United board to attempt Julio.

“The answer of the Paraguayan, thank you, but no thank you, I want to play. Julio turns 21 tomorrow. We are already talking about a Paraguayan boy on the other side of the world in the most competitive league who is fighting for his future and really say no to Borussia Dortmund, say no to Manchester United, say no to Valencia, prioritise that, playing, he wants to play from the start.”
