Everton manager Brian Sørensen said that he was proud of his side’s efforts as they went down 1-0 to Manchester United at Walton Hall Park on Sunday afternoon.

Grace Clinton’s fourth-minute goal separated the two sides as Everton fell to a narrow defeat.

When speaking to the media after the match, Everton boss Sørensen praised his side for sticking to the task following their early setback.

“I’m proud of them,” Sørensen said. “The reaction we gave after that was terrific, we created two big chances. They stuck to the plan, we wanted to attack United and we made them look ordinary in the last parts of the game.

“We are proud of the girls for the reaction and what they delivered out there. I feel for them not getting anything from it.”

Sørensen offered individual praise for summer signing Toni Payne. The player was introduced with 26 minutes remaining and she conducted herself well.

He said “Toni’s a good player. I had to put her in earlier than anticipated, but she has been great. I think she’s still getting used to the league and the physicality of it but she’s a great player.”

During the first half, Everton were dealt another injury blow after Inma Gabarro was forced off the pitch with a suspected knee injury. Gabarro’s injury comes just eight days after Aurora Galli ruptured her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). Sørensen is keeping his fingers crossed that the injury isn’t as bad as first feared.

He said “We think it’s a big one again, but let’s see. We are really hurting, it’s two key players that mean a lot for us. Inma is a terrific talent, she has showcased that in the few minutes that she was on the pitch today. I feel for her, for both of them.

Everton are next in action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Newcastle United in the Women’s League Cup.
