West Ham United forward Viviane Asseyi says that she needs to be more efficient in the opposition box this season.

The 30-year-old is set to begin her third season with The Hammers. She has netted six goals in each of her two seasons in the Barclays Women’s Super League so far.

Asseyi’s goals will be important for West Ham United this season as they look to climb the league table and the player says that she hopes to convert more of her chances in the opposition box.

“I had a lot of chances in the [last] season where I should score, so I need to be more efficient,” Asseyi said when speaking in a Barclays Women’s Super League media event. “I am working hard to improve my efficiency.”

It has been a summer of change at West Ham United. The East Londoners have lost some key players including goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold and defenders Hawa Cissoko and Risa Shimizu. Asseyi is sad to lose some experienced teammates, however, she is also very excited about the quality in the West Ham United squad going into the new season.

She said “Yes, we lost good players, that’s true but we have also brought good players in. This is life, you will not stay at one club all of your career.

“We have lost good players but we have good players too and everyone knows their roles. We want to build a strong togetherness and I think we’ve done it well.”

West Ham United begin the new campaign with a daunting trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. While Asseyi was hoping to start with a home game, she is happy to have the experience of playing at ‘The Theatre of Dreams’.

She said “You prefer to play at home in your first game but it’s like this and you take it because you have no control over the fixture list.

“There are worse places to start than playing at Old Trafford, so I’m happy with that. I had the opportunity to play at Old Trafford two years ago too and when you go there, you can feel all of the history of the stadium, it’s one of the biggest in the world. We are really lucky to play there.

“The league is good and you have to start by playing someone. I am happy to start at Old Trafford.”

West Ham United’s opening fixture of the new Barclays Women’s Super League season at Manchester United kicks-off at 12pm on Saturday afternoon.
