Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has insisted that he does not want to ‘run away’ from the challenge of reviving his side’s form following a six-game winless streak.
Matters were made even more frustrating for the Premier League champions on Tuesday night as Guardiola’s players threw away a three-goal lead after the 75th minute of their UEFA Champions League meeting with Feyenoord at the Etihad Stadium.
Goals from Erling Haaland and Ilkay Gundogan had put the hosts into a controlling position with 15 minutes remaining, only for Feyenoord to come back and stun those within the Etihad Stadium to make it six matches without a win for Manchester City.
Many have wondered what is next for the club as they travel to face arguably the most in-form and firing squad in world football on Sunday afternoon in Liverpool, with Guardiola once again stating that he is up for the fight this season and beyond.
Speaking to the media on Friday afternoon ahead of the clash with Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, Pep Guardiola insisted that it was him that wanted the opportunity to rebuild this Manchester City squad and re-find their form and consistency.
“It’s for sure; I want to stay! I want to do it! But the moment I feel I’m not positive for the club, another manager will come,” said Guardiola.
“But I want the opportunity to try it, I don’t want to run away, I want to be there, I want to rebuild the team in many aspects, from now on until the end of the season, the next seasons, to try to continue.”
He continued, “I asked for that challenge, I asked for this opportunity, because I feel it, I know what I want to do, I know what we need, I know what we have to do, knowing that in that moment our consistency that we had, obviously we don’t have it right now.
“But which team around the world is consistent during 10 years?! Tell me one. They don’t exist; not in NBA, not in Tennis, not in any sport, not even in golf. In a decade of time, like we have been, being consistent like we have been, you don’t find it, I’m sorry.”
It remains to be seen just how much of a rebuild Pep Guardiola intends to oversee in the coming transfer markets in particular, with several pointing towards the January window as an area when Manchester City must begin work on their struggling squad.
