Manchester United interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the club for the second time against Chelsea in the Premier League today.
Ahead of the Chelsea clash, Van Nistelrooy expressed his desire to stay at the club after Ruben Amorim takes over as the permanent boss.
He said to Sky Sports: “This was a special opportunity for me. I feel a strong desire to help the club forward and to share experiences from my playing days.
“I enjoy it and don’t regret it. I want to help, and that’s why I am here for. It is not about me or in which role.
“It is about doing something to help the club move forward, and that’s my target.”
Van Nistelrooy helped United return to winning ways by beating Leicester City 5-2 in the Carabao Cup in the mid-week.
The Red Devils have won only once in the league over the past month.
They are languishing in 13th spot with 11 points. Another defeat could further damage United’s ambition to finish in the top four.
Van Nistelrooy joined Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff in July. Amorim will start his United tenure after the November international break.
The Portuguese is expected to bring his backroom staff from Sporting CP to Old Trafford.
There are big doubts about Van Nistelrooy’s future. The former Dutch striker wants to stay in any role and help the club progress this season.
United would not want any conflict of ideas between the two coaches.
Amorim wants his team to play with a three-man defence at the back. Van Nistelrooy has played with a back four at United and during his time at PSV Eindhoven.
However, having a club legend on board could help him connect with the fans and players.
