“I cannot” defend myself after Europa League defeat, says Amorim | OneFootball

Ruben Amorim revealed that he would leave Manchester United without compensation if the board no longer felt he was “the right guy” to lead the club, following The Red Devils’ 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League final.

Brennan Johnson scored the only goal in the Basque Country as Spurs claimed their first European trophy in more than four decades, with the result confirming that Manchester United will not feature in any European competition next season.

Speaking to the media after Wednesday’s loss at San Mamés, Amorim insisted “we need to understand it’s tough for a club like ours not to be in the Champions League – but we have to use the other side. If we have more time, we have more time to think, to work during the week and to be better in the Premier League. That will be our focus.”

But while the Portuguese manager – who took the reins at Old Trafford in November 2024 – assured reporters that he is “really confident about [his] job”, he revealed that “if the board and the fans feel I’m not the right guy, I will go the next day without any conversation about compensation – but I will not quit.”

“In this moment,” he explained, “I’m not going to be here defending myself. It’s not my style, I cannot do it. It’s really hard for me. I have nothing to show to the fans and say I’m going to improve because of this, I have these problems’.”

Despite missing out on the UEFA Europa League title, Amorim suggested that he felt Manchester United outperformed their London rivals. “We didn’t perform perfect today, but we were better than the opponent,” he insisted.

In the second half, we try everything – with the central defenders, with the players wide, crosses going inside the box. I think I’m really honest with you guys, so I expect the same and there are some days where I said we were really poor. I think today was not the day. We were not perfect. We have a lot to improve, but I am always honest with you guys.”
