Heung-min Son has declared himself a Tottenham legend after lifting the club’s first piece of silverware in 17 years.
The Spurs captain got his hands on the Europa League trophy following a 1-0 win over Manchester United in what was a scrappy final at the San Mames stadium.
Son, who started the game on the bench, replaced Richarlison with around 20 minutes of normal time left to play.
Whilst the South Korean wasn’t able to pose much of an attacking threat, he put in a shift defensively as Spurs held on to Brennan Johnson’s first-half goal to spark scenes of jubilation at the sound of the full-time whistle.
Reflecting on becoming the first Spurs captain in almost two decades to lift a trophy for the club, Son believes he has now reached legendary status.
Speaking to TNT Sport, he said: “Let’s say I am a legend, why not. Only today. In 17 years no one has done it, today is the day, today I will say I am a legend of the club, lets enjoy it.
“It feels amazing, it is what I always dreamed for, it came true, I am the happiest man in the world.
“When you look at the whole season we had tough times, but we always stuck together with injuries and young players and I always want to give them advice and be positive. I have an amazing group of players with me.
“I felt the pressure, I wanted it so badly, the last seven games I was dreaming.
“I am going to miss the flight. Today is the day they can celebrate. Maybe we can call the Brighton game off.”
In addition to Spurs ending their trophy drought this season, so has Harry Kane after winning the first trophy of his career by firing Bayern Munich to a Bundesliga title.
Before concluding his interview with TNT Sports, Son had a special message for his former teammate as well as Eric Dier.
He added: “They are different trophies but we had an unbelievable partnership and trophy, was so happy he won his first trophy and Eric as well.”
