Hungary host what is expected to be a heavily rotated Germany team on Tuesday evening in their final group game of the Uefa Nations League.

This game is effectively a dead rubber as Die Mannschaft secured top spot with a game to spare, while the Magyars have avoided automatic relegation to League B.

Hungary could qualify for the quarter-finals but it would take an extraordinary set of results; not only would they have to beat Germany, they would need the Netherlands to lose to Bosnia and Herzegovina and obtain a 13-goal swing in goal difference.

With nothing on the line, Julian Nagelsmann is likely to name a much changed XI from the side that thrashed Bosnia 7-0 on Saturday. The former Bayern Munich manager has already confirmed that Alexander Nübel will start in goals over Oliver Baumann.

Jonathan Tah is suspended, meaning Nico Schlotterbeck could start. Captain Joshua Kimmich picked up a knock in the last game and could be rested.

Hungary are unscathed from their defeat to the Netherlands at the weekend, with defender Attila Fiola returning from suspension.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the match.

Form

Netherlands dished out a 4-0 beating at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, although the condition of Adam Szalai was of greater concern on Saturday. The coach fell ill on the sideline and had to be transported to Amsterdam hospital, but the Hungarian Football Federation confirmed later that night he was stable and conscious.

Hungary’s only win of the campaign thus far has come away against Bosnia, with whom they also drew at home. They drew 1-1 with ten-man Netherlands last month, and lost 5-0 to Germany in the group opener.

Germany: WDWWW

It’s been plain sailing for the Germans in this group, having won four of their five games. Their only blip was a 2-2 draw with Netherlands on the road in September.

Germany sit top of the group on 13 points, having scored 17 goals and conceded only three. No side across the four leagues has found the net more times.

Last Meeting

Germany 5-0 Hungary, 7th September 2024, Uefa Nations League

Hungary were handed an absolute pasting when they visited the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Düsseldorf in September. Niclas Füllkrug opened the scoring after 26 minutes with a tap-in, but it was in the second half when Germany really turned up the dial.

Jamal Musiala ran half the length of the pitch before doubling their lead and set up Florian Wirtz for their third goal. Aleksandar Pavlovic squeezed a shot between the goalkeeper’s legs for their fourth and Kai Havertz capped off the night from the penalty.
