Liverpool supporters rarely take long to embrace a new hero, and Hugo Ekitike has already begun to write his story at Anfield. The French forward, who arrived this summer from Eintracht Frankfurt in a £69 million move, made an immediate impression by scoring in Liverpool’s 4-2 Premier League opening win against AFC Bournemouth.
His 37th-minute strike was not only a vital breakthrough but also a glimpse of his ability to thrive under Arne Slot, who guided the Reds to the league title in his first season in charge. The goal, taken with composure after regaining control of the ball, highlighted Ekitike’s instinct for seizing half chances.
The bond between a striker and supporters at Liverpool has always been powerful. For Ekitike, the connection came quickly, as he was serenaded with a chant to the tune of Do the Conga. Speaking afterwards, the 23-year-old was clearly moved by the sound reverberating around Anfield.
“I heard the song when I was [in the] corner. It was amazing,” he said. “I’m very grateful and I want to hear it louder next time! It was fun.”
Few things underline belonging at Liverpool like a personalised chant, and Ekitike has already earned his. If the striker maintains this form, Anfield will have plenty of occasions to make that song louder.

Ekitike’s early contributions extend beyond the scoreboard. His celebration on Friday night carried a message of unity and remembrance. “The celebration [was] for Diogo [Jota] because I think it was an important day for him and his family and for the crowd. Obviously we were celebrating him.”
That tribute resonated with supporters, reminding them that goals at Anfield are often about more than just points on the board. They can be moments of collective emotion, a way to honour those no longer present, and a symbol of Liverpool’s togetherness.
For Arne Slot, the early success of his new striker is an encouraging sign. Liverpool’s recruitment of Ekitike was seen as both an investment in potential and a statement of intent after their title-winning campaign. With two goals already, including a sharp strike at Wembley in the Community Shield, he is adapting quickly to the rhythm of English football.
Slot has spoken of the importance of attacking variety and energy in his system. Ekitike’s ability to stretch defences, combine physicality with pace, and link with teammates suggests he can be a central figure in that plan. His presence also reduces the pressure on Liverpool’s established forwards, ensuring competition and depth in key attacking areas.
Liverpool’s history is filled with strikers who have left a lasting imprint at Anfield, and while it is too early to place Ekitike among them, the signs are promising. His goals are already shaping matches, his bond with supporters is forming, and his attitude reflects both humility and ambition.
For Liverpool, the challenge of defending their title has only just begun, but in Hugo Ekitike they may have found a forward capable of inspiring another memorable season at Anfield.
