The Terriers currently occupy the final play-off place in League One, but a five-game winless run has raised concerns over whether they will be able to last the distance.

Those worries have been heightened by the injury situation, with defender Matty Pearson the latest player to join a list of absences that includes Nigel Lonwijk, Ruben Rooksen, Mickel Miller, Joe Taylor, Rhys Healey and Danny Ward.

Michael Duff rules out Huddersfield Town free agent move

Naturally, that has got some fans wondering whether the club would benefit from reinforcements, with the club still able to sign players who are out of contract.

Yet, speaking to the Yorkshire Post, Duff made it clear that he is not looking at the free agent market, as he vowed to fight on with the current group.

“The squad is big enough. We have got a competitive squad. For the team to be in the position we are in with the amount of injuries we have had shows we have got a squad.

“To be honest, we have not even had a conversation about it, but bringing in another player who would be unfit (not match fit) wouldn’t be the answer to where we are at. We have enough players, and hopefully we can get the ones that are ours to add to what we already have as we are low on (available) numbers.”

Huddersfield Town players must step up in promotion battle

You can understand Duff’s stance here, as whilst it would be tempting to bring in a player who can help in the short-term, it’s not always as simple as that.

Firstly, those players without a club often aren’t up to speed in terms of fitness, so you need to weigh up how long it will be before they can make a meaningful contribution.

Furthermore, you don’t want to sign a player for the sake of it, so in some cases you’re better off waiting until your injured players return, or when the summer window opens, allowing you to make additions for the long-term benefit of the club.

Clearly, Duff’s squad is stretched right now, but he still has a lot of quality by League One standards, and it’s down to those on the fringes to show they can compete at this level.
