Huddersfield Town are currently on the hunt for a new manager following Michael Duff's exit, with three names looking the most likely to take over.

Huddersfield Town are still searching for a new manager, over two months after Michael Duff was sacked in March.

The League One club failed to bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking, finishing the season in 10th and 14 points behind the play-off places.

Duff's time came to an end two months prior to the end of a season that never really got going, with his side at the time dropping out of the play-off places in his final match in charge following a 1-0 defeat to Bristol Rovers..

Since January 2024, the Terriers have had four different managers (including Jon Worthington as interim) and their next appointment will mark their fifth in around a year and a half, with the period also marking some of the lowest moments in recent history for the club.

They were relegated from the Championship in 2024, dropping down to the third tier for the first time in 12 years, and from being in the Premier League for the 2018/19 season, to failing to make it out of the third tier only six years later, it has been a sharp decline for the club.

Given the recent instability surrounding managers, fans will hope that the next appointment is a long-term one who can bring a bit of stability to the club - here is a round-up of all the latest news on who may be the next in charge at the John Smith's Stadium.

David Wagner offered Huddersfield Town return chance despite his current stance

As reported by talkSPORT's Alex Crook last week, Huddersfield have offered the job to their former manager, David Wagner, just six years after he left the club by mutual consent in January 2019.

Whilst the club were sitting bottom of the Premier League at the time of his departure, Wagner is a cult hero at Town for overseeing their promotion to the top flight in 2017 and keeping them up in their first season back, so would likely be a popular choice among fans.

Since leaving the Terriers, he has been manager of Schalke, Young Boys and most recently Norwich City, with whom he spent 18 months with before being sacked in 2024 after City lost in the play-off semi-final to Leeds United.

The German oversaw a hugely successful period for the West Yorkshire club and managed to create a club culture with a defined way of playing, something which has been sorely lacking since his departure.

Despite the fact Wagner has been out of work since 2024 though, Daily Mail journalist Mike Keegan reported last month that while he would be open to a return to the John Smith's Stadium at some point, he did not believe that it was currently the right time for him to come back.

That would suggest Wagner has turned down the offer, but stranger things have happened in the world of football.

Scotland-based manager emerges as new contender for Huddersfield vacancyAs per a report from journalist Alan Nixonover the weekend, Northern Irish manager Stephen Robinson - currently at St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership - is now a leading candidate for the Town vacancy.

But it has also been reported that Cardiff City and QPR are both also interested in Robinson, so Huddersfield may face a battle to secure his signature if he is the top target.

Late last year, Robinson signed a new contract until 2027, so St Mirren do have a bit of leverage when it comes to whether or not he would be allowed to depart.

Since joining the club in 2022 from Morecambe, Robinson has done a great job and has guided his side to three successive top-six finishes, qualifying them for Europe for the first time since 1987 in the process.

Of course though, the name that is always going to attract the most attention is the aforementioned Wagner, given what he's previously done for the club.

And Sky Sports' lead EFL presenter David Prutton believes that if the German is convinced to return to Town - no matter how unlikely it may be - they must be installed as next season's League One promotion favourites.

"David Wagner getting the old band together, with rumors of Stuart Webber rejoining Huddersfield too," Prutton told FLW.

"It's a different set of circumstances, of course; the club now needs to get out of League One, whereas before, when they climbed out of the Championship, they weren't expected to even get into the Premier League, never mind stay there for a couple of years.

"I think the magic he created the first time around could potentially be repeated, but they do need the players to get out of League One, and I think that's what they've lacked this season.

"Also, there are some very big teams in League One now, as well as teams that have come blasting through it.
