Huddersfield Town have been linked with a move for Brad Potts from Preston North End this summer, although it may be a tall order for them to complete a deal for the versatile midfielder.

According to Alan Nixon, the Terriers are keen on bringing Potts to West Yorkshire ahead of the new League One campaign.

The 31-year-old made 29 appearances for the Lilywhites in the Championship last season, with a hamstring injury keeping him out of the side in the final months after picking it up against Sunderland in March.

Potts has been with PNE since transferring from Barnsley in January 2019, and has been a regular feature over the years for the Lancashire outfit, and it appears that Paul Heckingbottom is keen to keep him around at Deepdale despite his contract expiring next year, with the Lancashire Post claiming they have turned down Huddersfield's initial advances.

When asked about potentially signing Potts, FLW’s Huddersfield fan pundit Graeme Rayner claimed that his arrival in place of Brodie Spencer could make sense, with uncertainty surrounding the Northern Ireland international's future with the League One side.

He believes that if Potts can be convinced to step down to the third tier, then he could prove a solid, if unspectacular, signing.

“I’m sort of undecided on this one, it’s hard to tell,” Rayner told Football League World.

“At the moment, we have two players that would play in what would seem to be his position, we have Brodie Spencer, who is probably more of a right-back than a right-wing-back, and then we’ve got Lasse Sorensen, who is a right-wing-back.

“Many people feel that Brodie Spencer may be on his way out of the club, he only has a year left on his contract and it looks like the club haven’t been able to agree a new deal with him.

“But we also have young Neo Eccleston, who just signed a year-long extension, so we do have bodies in that position.

“If Brodie Spencer was to leave, then Brad Potts would seem to be a good choice.

“He’s played a lot of football in the Championship, he’s clearly regarded a pretty decent right-back/right-wing-back, able to attack, still relatively solid defensively, quite athletic.

“Yes, he is 31 and yes he did miss the back-end of last season, I don’t think he played since mid-March because of injury issues, but assuming he’s over that — we do like to sign an injured player — then he would potentially be a good fit.

“But it’s a pragmatic signing, I would say. He's not marquee or an exciting signing but certainly a potential body in an area where we might need bodies.

“And if we’re signing players from the Championship, who have done well in the Championship or a solid job, and we can convince them to drop a level, then why not?

“And we are going to be one of the teams seeking promotion this year, maybe he’d like a promotion on his record.

“So, hard to get excited about it but certainly able to think he would fit in alright.”

Huddersfield have already signed seven players so far this summer following Lee Grant’s appointment as manager, including the likes of Ryan Ledson, Sean Roughan and Marcus Harness.

Potts has had injury issues in recent times for PNE, but his Championship experience and his versatility could both be valuable assets.

While Huddersfield shouldn’t push the boat out financially to get this deal done, and it is encouraging they have fallback options ready after missing out on Ethan Galbraith, this could still be quite a smart move.

And if Potts can be convinced to join from the Championship, then it will boost the club’s promotion hopes - not to mention he's a good friend of summer signing Ryan Ledson, who may be in his ear about a potential crossing of the Pennines.
