“It’s becoming a derby,” said Pep Guardiola when Manchester City inevitably drew Real Madrid out of the two-team hat for the play-off round of the Champions League.
For the fourth year in a row, City will face off against Real Madrid, with their battles already etched into folklore fo both teams. If a hint of tiredness was detected in Guardiola’s voice, Carlo Ancelotti was equally keen to avoid City, something he vocalised following their win over Brest.
However, certainly from the Spanish capital, there is a certain degree of relish in the tie, with a chance to pile further misery on Guardiola, their arch-nemesis in Spain for so long. City are having a dreadful season by their standards. While that has been met with a minor revival and over €200m in signings in the January transfer window, but a 5-1 defeat to Arsenal made it evident their problems are far from gone.
In general, the tie does not have the shine it did of two years ago, pitting the two best sides in Europe against each other. Real Madrid have recruited Kylian Mbappe, but their injury crisis and a lack of consistency has made for an underwhelming season, despite remaining top of La Liga. Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger are all likely to miss the first leg in Manchester next week, leaving a rickety looking backline in front of Erling Haaland.

The clash at the Etihad does not need much selling, and as such, tickets are going to be hard to come by. Manchester City have released tickets, but as of yet have not confirmed whether they will have tickets available for general sale. Their current offering is only to fans who have purchased Champions League tickets last season or season-ticket holders. Meanwhile Real Madrid will not be releasing any of their away allocation for general sale, instead using them for members and supporters clubs.
That means that the only realistic option for neutrals, or fans that do not correspond to the above groups, to grab their ticket to the big game is via third-party website. There are three main options that tend to sell tickets: Viagogo, FootballTicketNet and LiveFootballTickets.com. Their prices begin at €190, €146 and €132 respectively.
Certainly it is also worth ensuring you do your research on the seller for a third-party site too. For example, LiveFootballTickets.com offer a 150% money-back guarantee on all of their tickets, and have a 4.8 out of 5 Trustpilot rating to reinforce consumer confidence. They also offer a dedicated customer service line which is in operation 24/7 for any fans who have issues or concerns.
