Carey joined Blackpool from non-league side King's Lynn Town in the summer of 2021, and he has caught the eye with some impressive performances at Bloomfield Road over the past four years, both in the Championship and League One.

The 24-year-old enjoyed the best campaign of his career this season as he netted 11 goals in 37 appearances to help the Seasiders to a ninth-placed finish in the third tier, and eight of those goals came during a prolific 11-game run between February and April.

As he approached the end of his contract at Bloomfield Road, Blackpool manager Steve Bruce revealed that the club had made Carey a "handsome offer" in an attempt to keep him, admitting that "we all want him to stay", but he has decided against committing to a new deal in order to return to the Championship with Charlton.

The Addicks are preparing for life back in the second tier following a five-year absence after beating Leyton Orient 1-0 in the League One play-off final at Wembley last month, and Carey is their first signing of what could be a busy summer.

Carey's move to Charlton was confirmed on Friday afternoon, but earlier in the day, it had looked as though he was heading to Derby County after journalist Pete O'Rourke claimed the Rams were in "advanced talks" to sign the midfielder on a free transfer.

However, Carey instead put pen-to-paper on a three-year contract with the Addicks, and manager Nathan Jones, who himself signed a new five-year deal at The Valley yesterday, revealed his delight at landing one of his long-term targets.

"Sonny is a player I’ve known for a while. He’s done well at Blackpool, he’s had a few seasons in the Championship and finished last season strongly," Jones told the club's official website.

“He’s 24 years of age, so has plenty of scope to improve, he’s athletic, he’s a ball-carrier, he can create, he can score, so those things add to what we’ve already got here."

It seems that Carey was just as pleased as Jones about his arrival at Charlton, and he took to social media to express his excitement about what could be ahead next season with his new club.

"Delighted to have signed for Charlton, a massive club with a great history. Can’t wait to get started and play at The Valley in front of all of you fans. Let’s make it a season to remember," Carey wrote on X.

Carey was one of the standout players in League One in the second half of last season for Blackpool, so he has certainly earned the opportunity to return to the Championship.

The midfielder has plenty of second tier experience, having previously spent two years in the division with the Seasiders, so he should be able to hit the ground running at Charlton next season, and while he may need to be a little more consistent if he is to thrive at a higher level, he will no doubt develop further under Jones' guidance.

With Jones signing a new long-term contract to end speculation about a potential move to Cardiff City and the club's transfer business now getting underway, Addicks supporters will be feeling increasingly optimistic heading into the new season.
