Diangana will leave the club over the summer when his contract expires.

Outgoing West Brom boss Tony Mowbray revealed earlier in the week that Grady Diangana will be departing the club over the summer when his contract expires.

The former Sunderland and Blackburn boss delivered the news in his press conference following Monday’s defeat to Derby. The 61-year-old was dismissed later that evening, but it is unclear whether he was aware of his fate before addressing the media or not.

A run of just one win in their last eight games appears to have consigned the Baggies to another season in the Championship, despite the fact they were inside the play-off spots just a few weeks ago.

Mowbray hinted that several senior players could be set to depart The Hawthorns over the summer, which would potentially allow for something of a rebuild, as the West Midlands outfit will no doubt strive to push for promotion once again.

With that in mind, FLW takes a look at how much West Brom will save on wages when Diangana leaves the club.

West Brom will save over £20,000 per week when Diangana leaves

While it was perhaps unusual to see a manager confirm the future of one of his players a matter of weeks before the end of the season, it does at least provide clarity as to where West Brom stand in regard to Diangana’s contract situation.

After six seasons with the Baggies, his time at the club will end in the summer, and there are sure to be plenty of potential suitors for the 27-year-old.

However, with the continued emergence of Tom Fellows, Diangana’s importance has diminished over the course of this season, which can be highlighted by the fact he has made just 14 starts in the league.

As a result, perhaps it is unsurprising that he will not be offered renewed terms, especially given the financial benefits that it will bring for West Brom.

They paid £18m to sign him from West Ham back in 2020 and Diangana is still commanding a fairly hefty wage at the club.

By allowing him to leave in the summer, the Baggies are saving themselves just over £20,000 every week (according to Capology estimates), by not having to pay Diangana’s wages.

When you spread that out across a wider period, the financial gains become significantly clearer. Over the course of a calendar year, West Brom will save over £1m by not having the wideman at the club.

While £1m is by no means a huge amount of money for a club who have been in the Premier League as recently as 2021, it still represents a valuable saving that could easily be invested elsewhere in the squad.

On top of Diangana’s departure, Mowbray also made it clear that there would be more exits to come at The Hawthorns ahead of next season.

He alluded to the fact that John Swift will also leave the club. And, while this was not confirmed by Mowbray, it is expected that fellow out-of-contract man, Semi Ajayi, will also be moving on.

As such, West Brom could be set for a significant reduction in their wage bill, before their summer transfer business even actually begins.

According to Capology estimates, Swift earns slightly more than Diangana at £22,500 per week, while Ajayi is thought to command a weekly wage of just over £16,500.

When you then factor in that two of the club’s three highest earners (according to Capology) are both currently only on loan deals until the end of the season, then the Baggies could potentially free up a huge amount of money over the summer.

With an average age of 26.4, West Brom currently have one of the oldest squads in the division, but if they spend the money that they are about to free up wisely, then they could bring the age of their squad down significantly, whilst also adding the quality to finish inside the top six next term.
