There's still a chance that the Dutch midfielder could leave Bramall Lane before the end of the window.
Sheffield United are not 100 per cent likely to hold onto Gus Hamer until after the transfer deadline hits.
That hugely disappointing day at Wembley set off a domino effect at Bramall Lane that everyone could see coming when the final whistle blew and the Blades missed out on a second opportunity at a Premier League return.
Some of those dominoes have fallen, unsurprisingly, like Vinicius Souza and Anel Ahmedhodzic both leaving the club this summer for top-flight European sides. Chris Wilder's sacking was more unexpected, although not completely unplausible, but one of the main dominoes at Bramall Lane - Hamer - remains standing, even though many thought it wouldn't be.
Last term's Championship Player of the Season would have been one of the odds-on favourites to leave United after the play-off final defeat, and yet we are just a matter of days and hours away from the window closing and he remains a Blade.
While there is time left on the clock, the club's fears of Hamer leaving will remain, and according to one report, a departure from the Championship side is still very much on the cards.
FourFourTwo have claimed that the 28-year-old midfielder could be available on a loan-to-buy deal, with the obligatory purchase costing any interested club between £15-20 million.
The likes of PSV Eindhoven and Leeds United have been linked with Hamer this summer. Although no move has been officially made, PSV are said to retain an interest in the player.
A number of Premier League clubs have turned down the opportunity to sign him in the current window, as per FourFourTwo, but the new conditions under which he may be available could see more teams come back to the negotiating table in the remaining days of the summer.
Crucially for the Blades, Hamer is not said to be angling for a move. He has started all of the club's Championship games so far in this new campaign with Ruben Selles at the helm. The Spanish boss gave the 28-year-old the captain's armband for their opening game defeat to Bristol City, who beat them 4-1 at Bramall Lane.
At this stage of the window, finding a replacement for Hamer, if that is what United would look to do in the event of this proposed loan deal, would be very tough. Other clubs would know that they would be on the lookout for a creative outlet and would therefore hike up the prices.
Unless Selles' side receive an offer that is too good to refuse, which the £15-20 million loan-to-buy probably isn't for a player that they signed for up to £15 million two summers ago, there's no way that they should consider letting Hamer go, especially when he seems content to stick around for the time being.
