Jobe Bellingham could be in line for a pay rise if he secures a move from Sunderland to Borussia Dortmund.
Borussia Dortmund are pushing to seal a deal for Sunderland’s Jobe Bellingham after his impressive season at the Stadium of Light.
The 19-year-old was a key figure for Regis Le Bris’ side as they secured a return to the Premier League thanks to a dramatic play-off final victory over Sheffield United.
Despite promotion, there are major doubts over Bellingham’s future, with reports claiming that the player has told Dortmund he wants to join the Bundesliga outfit, so the clubs are now in discussions over a fee.
Of course, this will be a great next step in Bellingham’s career, as Dortmund are a huge club who will be able to offer Champions League football, as well as competing for trophies domestically.
And, he is unlikely to just benefit on the pitch, as you would expect Dortmund to be in a position to offer Bellingham an increased wage.
Whilst these are only estimates, Capology claim the former Birmingham youngster is on a deal worth £12,500 a week with Sunderland, although that’s likely to have increased on promotion.
Even so, any figure is likely to be considerably lower than what Dortmund offers.
Again, we must stress these are estimates, but Capology state that Niklas Süle is the highest earner at the club on £190,000 a week, with star striker Serhou Guirassy on over £180,000 a week.
Obviously, Bellingham would not be anywhere near that given his lack of experience, but the vast majority of the first-team squad are on salaries that exceed £70,000 a week, something which Bellingham’s representatives will no doubt reference when it comes to negotiating his deal.
As we saw with Jude, the Bellingham family prioritise football over funds when it comes to deciding the best career path, so it’s not like they would be moving to Dortmund for the money.
As outlined above, it’s a great opportunity for him to jump up a level in his career, although it’s a blow for Sunderland, particularly as they are back in the Premier League.
The Black Cats' would’ve hoped that Bellingham wanted to stick around to test himself in the top-flight, but the appeal of Champions League football is understandable.
The Wearside outfit are in line to receive a huge fee for Bellingham, but he will be difficult to replace, as Le Bris trusted the youngster, who brought a combination of pace, power and skill to the midfield.
