Derby County are reportedly interested in Rhian Brewster
Derby County are interested in a potential deal to sign Rhian Brewster this summer amid uncertainty over his Sheffield United future.
According to journalist Dominic Dietrich, the Rams are considering an approach for the forward, who is currently a free agent.
Brewster’s contract with the Blades has expired, leading to speculation over where he will be plying his trade next season.
The 25-year-old contributed four goals and three assists from 36 appearances in the Championship last season, with Sheffield United missing out on promotion with a play-off final defeat to Sunderland.
Here we use estimated figures from Capology to see how much Derby may need to pay Brewster in order to secure his signature…
Brewster made the switch to Sheffield United from Liverpool in the 2020 summer transfer window, arriving for a club record fee.
The Blades reportedly paid £23.5 million to sign the forward as they looked to consolidate their place in the Premier League.
However, he has struggled for consistent game time at Bramall Lane, failing to live up to the cost of the deal to sign him.
The contract that he signed back in 2020 is worth £35,000 per week, making him the highest paid player in the Sheffield United squad at the moment.
The next highest paid player in the squad is Gustavo Hamer, with the Dutchman earning £30,000 per week from theYorkshire outfit.
However, Hamer has proven a far more important part of the team in his time at the club, and was key to their third place finish in the table last season.
It’s also likely that he will remain a consistent starter under Ruben Selles, whereas it remains to be seen whether Brewster has a place in the Spaniard’s plans.
Anel Ahmedhodzic, Tom Davies and Ivo Grbic round out the top five best paid players at Bramall Lane going into the new campaign, with the trio also each receiving £30,000 per week.
Derby will have to make Brewster their highest paid player if they are to sign him to a similar wage to what he’s been making at Sheffield United.
The Rams’ best paid player at the moment is Matt Clarke, who arrived in the January transfer market from Middlesbrough.
The centre-back is paid £20,000 per week, so the jump up to Brewster’s £35,000-a-week wages could prove tricky for the club.
While the forward could be open to a reduction in salary, he would have to take an almost 50 per cent cut to stay in line with the salary structure currently in place at Pride Park.
Ben Osborn is the second best paid player in John Eustace’s side, with the midfielder receiving £17,500, which is half of what Brewster’s previous contract was worth at Bramall Lane.
The average weekly salary at Derby is £7,069, highlighting the gap between these two clubs, who fought at opposite ends of the Championship last season.
