Taking a look at how Harvey Vale's current salary compares to the Sunderland squad amid January transfer interest
Sunderland are one of several clubs interested in signing Harvey Vale from Chelsea in January.
It has been reported by Ben Jacobs that Sunderland are one of the sides keeping tabs on Vale.
According to the BBC (11.28, 29 December), the Black Cats are eyeing a potential winter move for the 21-year-old.
It is expected that he will depart the London club on a permanent basis due to his contract expiring in the summer.
However, Sunderland face competition from clubs across Europe, as well as the Championship.
Here we take a look at his wages and see how it compares to the rest of the Sunderland squad ahead of a potential 2025 move to the Stadium of Light.
It has been reported by The Sun that Vale is currently earning an estimated £26,000 per week as part of his Chelsea contract.
But that deal is set to expire in the summer, meaning he is at risk of becoming a free agent in 2025 unless he can find a new club.
That means he might be open to taking a pay cut if necessary in order to take on the next step in his career.
Vale has struggled for game time at Chelsea, having come through the London club’s academy system.
The 21-year-old has made just two appearances in Enzo Maresca’s side so far this season since returning from his loan spell at Bristol Rovers, with both games coming in the Europa Conference League.
During his loan spell with the Pirates, the youngster played 39 times and contributed two goals, as well as five assists.
He will be hoping to secure consistent game time wherever he moves next, with a departure from Chelsea now inevitable.
Sunderland’s wage bill is much smaller in comparison to Chelsea, and the Championship side will not be able to offer someone like Vale the same kind of salary.
According to estimated figures from Capology, the highest paid permanent player at the club is Daniel Ballard.
The defender is currently earning £25,000 per week, and is one of the most important members of Régis Le Bris’ squad.
The next highest-paid player is Alan Browne, who joined as a free agent in the summer after his departure from Preston North End.
The Irishman is earning £15,000 per week, indicating that it is unlikely that Vale will be able to command anywhere near the £26,000-a-week that he is reportedly receiving at Chelsea at the moment.
This could also hurt Sunderland’s chances of signing the forward, as he may feel he can earn more moving elsewhere.
The Wearside outfit have proven themselves as a great place for young players to develop and receive ample game time, and there is no doubt that Vale would be a part of Le Bris’ first team plans.
But Sunderland will face stiff competition in the race to his signature, and the ability to offer a strong salary package will also be important in negotiations.
Jobe Bellingham and Patrick Roberts are their third highest paid players, earning £12,500 per week based on Capology’s figures.
