Despite favouring a move to Manchester United over the host of clubs to have registered their interest in him, Mathys Tel is on his way to North London to put pen to paper on a deal with Tottenham Hotspur.
Indeed, it’s been a tumultuous turn of events for fans of both clubs – and presumably the player, too.
Numerous reports suggested he had set his sights on Old Trafford after informing Bayern Munich of his desire to leave this window. The Bundesliga giants then reached a verbal agreement with Spurs to sanction the player’s exit for £50.1 million – before Tel rejected Daniel Levy, who’d flown to Germany to try and convince him in face-to-face talks.
Negotiations were then ongoing between Bayern and United for a matter of days, to the point where, earlier today, all signs pointed towards the ‘hard-working’ teenager swapping Munich for Manchester to see out the remainder of the term.

Yet, the prospective switch collapsed entirely, and Tottenham were granted a clear route to meet Bayern’s demands and finally get their deal over the line.
The Telegraph journalist James Ducker has since revealed why the Reds failed in their pursuit, writing on X/Twitter: “No further incomings expected at #MUFC before the deadline. United baulked at the £5m loan fee Bayern demanded for Mathys Tel – considered [an] expensive risk for largely unproven 19yo. So Rashford and Antony out on loan with no replacements expected. [Tyrell] Malacia set to join PSV on loan.”
As such, Ruben Amorim will now have only Amad Diallo, Alejandro Garnacho, Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund as his forward depth for the rest of the season – all while the side are competing in the league, FA Cup and Europa League. Any injuries could prove detrimental to an already dismal campaign.
