Manchester United recently unveiled plans to transform Old Trafford into a 100,000-seat venue.
At an estimated cost of £2bn and taking around five years to complete, it promises to be one of the largest construction projects that football has ever seen.

But how will it compare to other recent stadiums built or rebuilt at significant cost?
Work on upgrading Barcelona's spiritual abode to 105,000 seats from its previous 99,354 has overrun while the stadium itself is expected to cost €900m. Hansi Flick's side had hoped to be back in time for last year's 125th anniversary.
Across LaLiga, rebuilding the Bernabéu hasn't been an easy task for Real Madrid with their most recent accounts revealing that it cost €1.76bn to bring the European champions' capacity up to 81,000 alongside features that include a retractable roof.

Spurs' impressive home built on the site of the old White Hart Lane holds an impressive 62,850 and has played host to several NFL games but costs spiralled from an initial estimate of £305m to £1.2bn by the time it reopened in April 2019.

A long-awaited move from Goodison Park will see Everton take up residence in their new 52,888-capacity venue at Bramley-Moore Dock next season but like Spurs, costs rose exponentially with an initial "capped" £500m figure rising above £750m.
